Be Nice
April 20, 2008On my drive back to UCLA late at night, I had to stop by Ralphs to purchase milk (so that I could have cereal the next morning). It was 1am and I was surprised to find the line to check out 6-7 people long. While I stood in line impatiently, I asked “Can you open up a new teller, please?” in a frustrated tone. No response. 10 minutes later, I was still in line and I felt as if no one could hear me. Across the store, I watch a happy, young couple walk to the desk where a couple of employees were standing (presumably to ask them if they could purchase a couple bottles of water quickly – without having to stand in line). The employee smiled and quickly opened up a new teller for them.
This is just another example where being nice can save you a lot of time, get you what you want, and make you happier in the end.
